The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
